SB 1189 -- HOLOCAUST EDUCATION AND AWARENESS COMMISSION SPONSOR: Gibbons (Dempsey) COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass by consent" by the Committee on Veterans by a vote of 11 to 0. This bill establishes the Holocaust Education and Awareness Commission in the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to promote holocaust education and awareness programs. The bill specifies the membership of the 12-member commission appointed by the Governor with the advice and consent of the Senate. FISCAL NOTE: No impact on state funds in FY 2007, FY 2008, and FY 2009. PROPONENTS: Supporters say that the purpose of holocaust education and awareness is to ensure that this horrific event isn't lost in a history text book. Holocaust history remains relevant because genocide still occurs. The commission will heighten the awareness of genocide, and it will attract contributions for these educational efforts. Testifying for the bill were Senator Gibbons; and Harvey Tettlebaum, Regional Council of the Anti-Defamation League. OPPONENTS: There was no opposition voiced to the committee.
